Programme Outline

The Foundation Programme for Undergraduate Studies is an intensive one year foundation programme for students who are aiming to pursue an undergraduate degree in Law. This programme is aimed at high achieving students who have completed their secondary school education but who do not yet qualify for direct entry into Diploma in Law or the LLB programme. This programme combines study in law with academic English and study skills and helps students

  • Gain linguistic competence
  • Improve academic study skills
  • Get an introduction to key areas and concepts in law

The programme is spread over 26 study weeks and students are assessed twice during the course to evaluate their progress.

Entry to Law Degree

You may be offered a place in the Diploma in Law programme if you achieve 65% in all subjects undertaken in both terms of the Foundation Programme and have a satisfactory academic reference and fulfil the criteria for enrolment in Diploma in Law.

Courses

The courses are specifically designed to:

  • Develop critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Help students speak and write English more fluently.
  • Develop the students Oral skills and to help students speak with expression, clarity and confidence.
  • Introduce the students to the key concepts, principles and institutions of the English legal system
  • Give students an introduction to the main subjects of law including Contract law, Criminal law, Public law, Tort Law, EU Law & International Law.

First Term

Culture, Theory and Society

The module is designed to develop critical thinking and analytical skills. Training in Culture, theory & society is not only meant to develop critical thinking and analytical skills but is designed to impart vast intellectual growth and overall insight.

Academic English-I (AE-I)

The module is designed to train students in the correct use of grammar, spelling and punctuation and to help them communicate in English more fluently. The level of proficiency attained through this module is a key factor in succeeding through the LLB programme.

Readers Theatre

The module is designed to develop the students’ oral/verbal skills and to help students speak with expression, clarity and confidence. Building and developing these traits are essential for success through the LLB programme as well as through the course of one’s professional career.

Introduction to Legal Studies 1

This is an integrated version which is a mix of Common law, Public law and Contract law. It will prepare a student for the CertHE in Common Law Programme modules.

Second Term

Introduction to Legal Studies 2

This is an integrated version which is a mix of Common law, Public law and Contract law. It will prepare a student for the CertHE in Common Law Programme modules.

Academic English-II (AE-II)

This module is an advanced version of AE-I. To undertake this course, students should have passed AE-I. This will also enable students to acquire the necessary skills for excelling in the IELTS examinations and ensure high level proficiency in English language.

Oral Communication

This module is meant to strengthen the students’ grasp over English and to inculcate the ability of mooting, debating and confident public speaking in English.

Foundation Project

It enables a student to be thoroughly instructed in the basic elements of research, thesis writing and presentation skills.
